Research

Research

To understand the needs of busy individuals struggling to incorporate workouts into their routines, I began with secondary research on habit formation and time management trends. This provided insights into user behaviors, daily schedules, and motivations. I then conducted interviews with individuals balancing work, family, and personal goals to explore their challenges and habits.
Through my research, I gained valuable insights into the target audience's behaviors, challenges, and motivations:

  • Many users struggle with a lack of structured time and energy to work out, leading to low engagement with fitness routines.

  • Flexibility and simplicity are critical factors; users prefer quick, customizable solutions that integrate seamlessly into their daily lives.

  • There is a strong demand for personalized reminders and progress tracking to boost accountability and motivation.

  • Competitor analysis revealed gaps in habit-stacking tools, particularly in apps that combine fitness with time management.

Competitive analysis

Empaty Map

I analyzed apps like Freeletics to evaluate their support for habit formation and time management. While they offer personalized plans, gaps in flexibility and integration with busy schedules revealed opportunities for StackFit to excel with habit stacking and customizable routines.

I created an empathy map based on the user interviews and research findings. The empathy map highlights what users say, think, do, and feel, providing a clearer picture of their experiences and challenges

DEFINE AND IDEATE

Defining the problems

To address Laura's needs, I created problem statements, solution statements, and "How Might We" questions. This helped frame her challenges and guided the design of a flexible solution that fits into her busy lifestyle.

User interviews

User interviews

To better understand the needs and challenges of busy individuals trying to incorporate workouts into their daily routines, I conducted a series of interviews with people in their late 20s and 30s. Each interview lasted about 15–20 minutes, offering valuable insights into their struggles and motivations. The feedback from these interviews highlighted several key points:

  • “I know exercise is good for me, but I just don’t have the time with my schedule.”

  • “When I don’t exercise, I feel lazy, and it impacts my mental health and how I perform at work.”

  • “I want to work out more, but I feel overwhelmed trying to fit it into my day.”

  • “Not exercising makes me feel bad about myself, but finding time is such a challenge.”

These insights emphasized the need for a solution that makes exercise accessible, flexible, and easy to integrate into busy lifestyles.

Empaty Map

To better understand the target audience and align the design with their needs, I created an empathy map based on the user interviews and research findings. The empathy map highlights what users say, think, do, and feel, providing a clearer picture of their experiences and challenges

Insights

  • Lack of Time: Busy schedules leave little room for exercise, making it hard to prioritize physical activity.

  • Difficulty Maintaining Routine: Consistently finding time for workouts amidst daily responsibilities feels overwhelming.

  • Negative Emotional Impact: Skipping exercise leads to feelings of guilt, laziness, and reduced self-esteem.

  • Missed Health Benefits: Awareness of the positive impact of exercise contrasts with the inability to act on it, creating frustration.

Needs

  • Flexible Solutions: Quick, adaptable workout options that fit into small gaps in a busy day.

  • Simplified Routines: Easy-to-follow exercises that don't require extensive planning or preparation.

  • Motivational Support: Encouragement and reminders to stay consistent and overcome feelings of laziness.

  • Time Optimization: Tools to help users make the most of their spare moments without feeling overwhelmed.

  • Emotional Reassurance: Features that promote a sense of accomplishment and boost self-esteem.
