Designing a Native App to Help Busy Professionals Build
Consistent Workout Habits

Overview

Stackfit

My Role:

UX / UI Designer

Duration

10 days design sprint, November 2023

Context

For the StackFit project, we started by identifying a key challenge: busy young professionals struggle to find time for exercise, leading to feelings of laziness and guilt. The goal was to create a habit-stacking app that helps users fit workouts into their day effortlessly.

User research revealed that while people understood the benefits of exercise, they lacked the time and motivation to stay consistent. This insight guided the design toward a seamless experience, integrating short, stackable workouts with a timer and progress tracking to encourage long-term engagement.

We conducted a competitive analysis of key fitness apps like Freeletics (click here for details) and carried out user interviews to understand how busy professionals approach exercise. The goal was to identify best practices, benchmark against leading fitness platforms, and uncover opportunities for StackFit to stand out with habit stacking and flexible workout integration.

“When I don’t exercise, I feel lazy, and it impacts my mental health and how I perform at work.”

“Not exercising makes me feel bad about myself, but finding time is such a challenge.”

“I know exercise is good for me, but I just don’t have the time with my schedule.”

After compiling and analyzing the qualitative data from our competitive analysis and user interviews, we uncovered key insights that shaped our approach:

  • Users face challenges in integrating exercise into their busy schedules, often feeling that fitness apps lack flexibility.

  • Many apps offer rigid workout plans, which fail to cater to individual needs or time constraints.

  • Users are motivated by small wins and consistent progress, but struggle with staying engaged over time without proper support.

To better understand the target audience and align the design with their needs, I created an empathy map based on the user interviews and research findings.

The empathy map highlights what users say, think, do, and feel, providing a clearer picture of their experiences and challenges The empathy map highlighted key user emotions, behaviors, and pain points, which were essential in shaping the design of StackFit and helped in creating the user persona.

The Problem

Problem Statement

Busy young professionals are struggling to maintain their physical and mental health due to limited time for exercise, leading to feelings of laziness and guilt, and hindering their overall well-being.

Hypothesis Statement

By creating a solution that promotes habit stacking and rewards consistency, busy young professionals will be able to integrate more exercise into their daily routines, improving their overall physical and mental well-being.

So the challenge became clear: StackFit’s main issue wasn’t just the workout plans or app features, but a lack of flexibility and clear motivation to help users stay consistent and fit exercise into their busy schedules.

From low-fi wireframes to final UI Design

We designed and mapped out the core user flow and user journey for StackFit, creating mid-fidelity wireframes to streamline workout tracking and habit stacking. Through user feedback, we refined key elements such as the flexibility of workout routines, the integration of progress tracking, and clear calls-to-action, ensuring a more motivating and intuitive experience for users.

Reflections & Next steps

💪 Sharpened My UX Skills – StackFit was one of the projects I worked on during my time at Ironhack. I explored the full UX/UI design process—from user interviews and journey mapping to prototyping and visual design—within a short sprint.
🧠 Designing for a Niche User – While I enjoy staying active, I don’t typically follow stack-based workout routines. This meant I had to rely heavily on user research to truly understand the goals and habits of fitness-focused users.
🚀 What’s Next? – If taken further, I’d:
• Conduct additional user testing to validate key flows
• Collaborate with a developer to build an MVP
• Add progress tracking and habit-forming features
• Test the product with a small group of real users
🔧 Still a Concept – StackFit remains a prototype, but it challenged me to design a personalized, goal-driven fitness experience that helps users build sustainable workout habits.
